ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Angela East MSTAT LRAM ARAM
Alexander Technique is not a treatment or a therapy. It is an education that teaches you to manage your own pain and prevent it from recurring. It is particularly effective for people with lower back pain, sciatica and RSI but has been known to help with a multitude of ailments, including anxiety and depression. By breaking the muscular habits that have resulted in the pain, one can be retrained to lead a happier, healthier and freer life.
Many people think that it teaches posture. While your posture will improve after a course of lessons, this is only one by-product. Alexander Technique teaches many things relating to the way we use our minds and bodies. These are learned through a series of procedures, all of which involve movement. The quality of movement improves the performance of musicians, actors and sports people as well as reducing and preventing pain.
F.M.Alexander, who discovered the technique, was himself an actor and the use of the voice can be a particular area of study for those involved in public speaking.
The principles behind the technique can be applied to any problem, whether it be personal relationships, financial issues, losing weight or enhancing one's career. In short, the technique is beneficial for anyone and everyone.
Clinical trial results funded by the Medical Research Council and the NHS and published in the British Medical Journal show that Alexander Technique lessons provide long-term benefit for chronic back pain sufferers and proved to be the most beneficial of the approaches tested.
