What is yoga?

The physical postures of yoga will strengthen, tone and relax your muscles and your mind so that that you can work towards being released from your bodily systems, enabling you to live life closer to your potential.

Yoga is both a physical and mental practice, in fact one definition of the word yoga is 'union' - of mind and body. The physical asanas keep you flexible and strong, and build up your stamina, but that's not the only benefit. In practicing the physical poses, the mind becomes calmer, clearer and more focussed. This is why yoga is so good for stress and anxiety.

Yoga involves tuning in to your breath, moving from your core, setting an intention and staying in the present. Regular practice of the combination of these elements will infuse your life and before long you will begin to understand that yoga is more than an exercise class.

Yoga is a very individual practice with room for every body type and classes to suit all. reCentre-health classes will have a maximum of 12 clients which will allow the teacher to attend to each person's individual needs. Our teachers have years of experience in their field and exhibit the highest teaching standards.

Clients practise yoga on mats on the floor in the studio. reCentre-health is fully equipped with mats and other props that may be required for some of the poses that are harder to reach.

Iyengar Yoga

IYENGAR® yoga is suitable for all levels of students at all ages. It is known for its attention to detail and use of props which enables poses to be done more effectively at whatever level of ability. It is most beneficial to commit to a regular yoga class because each class is different, often with a special focus on an area of the body to be worked on. This means you get a very balanced practice, regularly working every muscle in your body. There are always alternatives to do if you are tired or injured, so you leave feeling much better than when you arrived.

The Iyengar training is rigorous and thorough, and consequently the classes are very safe for all abilities and fitness. In particular, if you have a particular injury or challenge, there will always be a safe way of adapting poses for you.

Diana has been practising Iyengar yoga for over 10 years and qualified as a certified IYENGAR® yoga teacher through the IYA(UK) in 2007. She regularly goes to classes, workshops and training days with outstanding BKS Iyengar trained teachers from around the globe. Diana particularly enjoys introducing beginners to yoga, and working with them as they continue their yogic journey. One reason she is committed to Iyengar yoga is that it is suitable for all ages and abilities, and her classes often have multi-generational groups (often of differing ability) from the same family in them. She also teaches her mother Iris every week and they regularly go on retreats together. Diana says: "I started practising yoga during a particularly stressful time in my life, and found it an invaluable tool with which to stay grounded. Nowadays yoga is much more than just a tool to me, it's a companion to every part of my life, keeping me physically fit, clearing and calming my mind, and teaching me so much about myself and life itself. It was observing the more experienced members of the Iyengar community that inspired me to learn to teach: long-term practitioners of yoga seem to mature so gracefully! I wanted to pass on to others what I was learning for myself, and this works both ways: I have found that in teaching students, they in turn teach me so much more about yoga.

I went to India last winter for a long-awaited first trip, and had a wonderful time exploring the sights, history and culture of the home of yoga. I did as many classes as I could on the way, finishing up in Mumbai for a few weeks where I attended classes with truly inspirational teachers, some of whom I had been taught by at conventions and workshops in the UK over the years. "

Diana teaches on Wednesday lunchtime and Thursday morning at reCentre. Both are general level, so all are welcome (the Wednesday class is particularly suitable for beginners and returners).
