Kid's Capoeira
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that was developed over 500 years ago by slaves when they were taken from Africa to Brazil. Capoeira is a unique martial art that incorporates mental awareness, physical strength and flexibility, musicality, acrobatics and dance. In Capoeira, there is little physical contact between capoeiristas and most movements are made to evade opponents. The "Jogo de Capoeira" (game of Capoeira) can be really won by knowing your opponent and outwitting them.
Today, made popular by various activities including the BBC's interim adverts Capoeira is used widely as part of general education programmes, as part of sport training, particularly in football and in physiotherapy. The active barefoot activity that requires agility of mind and body is excellent for good development.
The rich cultural history of capoeira is a vital part of it and we teach students about both the origins of capoeira and about its role in Brazilian history, and how it continues to be used today.
Students form a roda, or circle, and take turns playing musical instruments (such as the Berimbau), singing, or ritually "sparring" in pairs in the center of the circle. The sparring is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, takedowns, and with extensive use of leg sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. The activity is non-contact based and students are well prepared before they begin facing one another to "spar"
Music is integral to capoeira. It sets the tempo and style of game that is to be played within the roda. The music is composed of instruments and song. The tempos differ from very slow to very fast. Many of the songs are sung in a call and response format while others are in the form of a narrative.
In September we will begin weekly classes. During the 10 week programme, students will: - learn the basic movements of capoeira - learn a range of songs in Portuguese and Yoruba - have an understanding of the cultural and historical context of capoeira - learn songs and phrases in Portuguese - improve team skills and self confidence - be able to improvise routines and 'play' with an opponent - take part in a performance - receive a Certificate of Achievement
If students continue training for 20 weeks, they will be able to take part in the Batizado (grading ceremony). During the Batizado, students will be called to play against masters from Brazil and will be awarded their first belt and grade 1 certificate.
