Mindfulness

These sessions are held on Thursday evenings at 6.00pm

Mindfulness is a basic human quality, a way of learning to pay attention to what is happening in the moment and your life. Very often we go through our day thinking about a conversation we had in the past or a social event that we have that evening. We tend to pay very little attention to what is happening around us in the moment which can mean we are unaware of our experience most of the time. Mindfulness therefore brings us back from our thoughts and the pressures of everyday life by changing the direction of our awareness to the simple fact that we are just breathing. It is a natural quality that each of us possess which, when we practice, improves performance and reduces stress.

Evidence-Based Results

Nearly three decades of scientific research all over the world suggest that practising mindfulness can positively and often profoundly affect our ability to reduce medical symptoms and psychological disorders while learning to live life more fully.

Stress

Research has shown that people who practice mindfulness have lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. This is due to their practice enabling them to react in a different way when confronted with emotional or physical stress.

Mental Health

Mindfulness is widely embraced by the mental health services as an integral part of the treatment for many disorders, such as anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder and PTSD.

The Brain

Research by neuroscientists examined the brains of Buddhist monks and found a significant difference in the organisation of their brains when compared to non-meditators. This is due to the practice reducing over activity and by calming the mind we are able to focus clearly on our jobs and relationships with families and friends.

The benefits of Mindfulness

To be fully present in the here and now To become connected to ourselves, to others and the world around us To learn the distinction between ourselves and our thoughts

The Class

There are times throughout the year and our lives when we lose our regular practice of mindfulness. There are also times when our practice loses momentum, we become stuck and could use a little guidance and the support of others who also practice to get us back on track. The drop-in classes are an excellent opportunity to meet and practice with others through guided meditation, group sharing and a chance to ask a trained Mindfulness teacher any questions that may arise. With the use of practices such as the body scan, mindfulness of breathing/bodily sensations/thoughts and feelings, and mindful movement the class will also include theory and practices from the 8 week Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction course so that not only can participants practice together but also develop their understanding of mindfulness.
