PREGNANCY

Congratulations on your pregnancy. While your body is at work creating your baby you are likely to be experiencing quite a journey. Every mum will have a unique experience, with common threads that make this a great time to connect with others in a similar position.

Please note, it is strongly advised that you wait until after your 12 week scan before attending any new form of exercise. This is based on advice given by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

It is paramount that you attend specifically designed classes. While we seek to accommodate pregnancy in all our classes, not all our teachers are trained in prenatal knowledge and therefore find that adjusting the spectrum of exercises to suit pregnancy compromises the experience for everyone in the class, including you.

Therapies that are suitable throughout pregnancy and beyond

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe form of treatment while you are pregnant. It works naturally and harmoniously with your body, relieving those common but often unpleasant side-effects and leaving you freer to enjoy your pregnancy.

In the early weeks you may be troubled by nausea and vomiting. This will probably pass by the second trimester, but while it lasts it can be very debilitating and interfere with your daily life. Acupuncture is particularly effective at alleviating this and a short course of treatment can make a huge difference.

In the later months you may suffer from heartburn, migraine, headaches, raised blood pressure, oedema, carpal tunnel syndrome and leg cramps.

Towards the end of pregnancy, acupuncture is a powerful tool and can work in ways you may not have considered. If your baby is breech, applying a herb to acupoints on the bladder meridian (on your foot), which are linked to your uterus, can turn your baby into the head-down position.

Similarly, a full-term baby stubbornly refusing to be born can be encouraged with acupuncture. Most women want to go into labour naturally, but sometimes it is necessary to induce labour to protect mother and baby. Acupuncture can induce labour safely and avoid the need for a drug-based intervention.

Reflexology

Pregnancy Reflexology can help with relaxation of both body and mind, an essential part of any healthy pregnancy. Regulate sleep-wake cycles and encourage good quality sleep. Increase circulation to help with any water retention or fatigue in the limbs. To combat pregnancy-related issues such as back pain, digestive disturbances, bladder function and insomnia.

As the due date arrives, to prepare your body for labour, which may help to reduce delivery time and assist with an easier labour. To bring about a natural labour, working gently to encourage contractions to begin without being artificially induced. Work to encourage and prepare your body for a speedier recovery post-partum.
